How much do wrist tattoos hurt?
The inner wrist is painful enough to be memorable but not brutal. The outer wrist and wrist band hurt slightly more because of the tendons running over the radius.
On our placement chart, this spot sits in the medium pain tier: uncomfortable but manageable. The pain chart by body location explains the three things behind it: skin thickness, bone proximity and nerve density.
How well do wrist tattoos age?
The placement guide says the inner wrist ages well for a single word, a small symbol or a thin botanical. The fine-line style guide is less generous: it counts the inner wrist as a high-movement zone where fine line fades significantly faster. Keep the design simple and size it up if you can.
Watch a design age on medium wear skin, the closest simulator tier for a tattoo on the wrist, from healed to 20 years.

What designs work on the wrist?
Great for a single word, a small symbol or a thin botanical. Long script wraps awkwardly, so go inner forearm if you want a sentence. A thin outer-wrist band is a clean, classic look, and it reads as more permanent because a watch cannot hide it.
What is healing like on the wrist?
Watches, bracelets and cuffs all sit right on it. Leave them off until it has closed, and expect it to get knocked during normal hand use.
The basics are the same everywhere; see best tattoo aftercare and what not to do after a tattoo. To check what is normal on a given day, use the healing day tracker.
Before you book
Do not count on numbing cream: the pain guide lists the inner wrist among the spots where it does not work well.
Whatever the spot, look for healed photos of this placement in the artist’s portfolio, not just fresh ones. How to choose a tattoo artist has the full checklist.
