Drying and itch · Days 4–7
Day 4: tight and starting to itch
The surface starts drying and tightening, and for many people this is the day the itch shows up. Warmth at this point should be fading. Heat that is still noticeable and growing on day 4 is worth a call.
What to do today
- Pat or tap the itch. No scratching
- Keep the balm layer thin: you want it to breathe, not suffocate
- Wash off sweat promptly if you were active
Under second-skin (Saniderm, Tegaderm)?
If your artist gave you a second piece, it often goes on now and stays for a few more days. That route usually means less visible peeling later.
Saniderm peel, day by day →Normal in the drying and itch stage
The surface dries and tightens. Itching starts, light flaking may begin and the colors look a bit faded. This is the top layer of skin, not your ink.
- Tight, slightly stiff skin
- Itching that ranges from mild to maddening
- Light flaking starting, sometimes earlier on small tattoos
- Colors looking duller than on day 1
Care for this stage
- Keep washing and keep the balm layer thin
- Pat or tap when it itches. Do not scratch
- No swimming, baths or soaking
